out or suppressing difference - but this is likely to have a negative impact on problem solving capability, which in turn leads to poor quality decisions. Motivation then decreases, as employees feel increasingly disengaged from the organisation.
The opportunity for an organisation therefore is to exploit the potentially vast benefits of diversity, whilst eliminating the potentially negative side effects.
When considering diversity, many people think of stereotypes, eg cultural diversity, gender differences etc. The problem with a stereotype however, is that no one individual conforms to it exactly, and yet, in the workplace it is individuals that we are dealing with. At Lightbeam, therefore, we place the emphasis on exploration of individual differences, and not stereotypes.
One of the first ways we do this is via developing awareness of the self and other team members, so that differences can be positively embraced.
A starting point for this is gaining an understanding of our natural motivations and preferences, and how these are likely to interact with those of others. In order to gain that understanding we use the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), which is the world leader in psychometric tools used in business today.
Once an understanding has been gained we can look at individual characteristics, start to explore how these are seen by others and discuss suggestions for development.
Via our Diversity programme, each individual will gain a deeper understanding of themselves, their strengths, their preferred styles, and ways of working. This gives them opportunities to adapt their style appropriately, to meet the needs of other people and situations. Unimpeded by the conflicts and tensions which are caused by differing working styles and preferences, the organisation will see immediate improvements in a) employee relationships, b) the ability to solve problems quickly and effectively, and c) decision quality.
In addition, it will provide an environment where the unique talents which individuals bring to a team will be better valued and utilised, leading to improved trust and more harmony within the team.
Overall, the organisation will gain from higher levels of productivity, via a more motivated and engaged workforce.
Our Diversity programme provides opportunities at both the team and individual level, to understand, explore and exploit difference using the MBTI "language".
MBTI Individual Analysis
The MBTI Individual Analysis is a series of one-to-one sessions with a qualified MBTI practitioner, with the emphasis on personal learning and growth.
Individuals will complete the MBTI questionnaire, and then spend some time exploring and confirming their personality type with the practitioner. Subsequent sessions will then look at how they may be seen by others, provide suggestions for development of less preferred styles as well as ways of improving communication, problem solving and decision making. These subsequent sessions may be performed in conjunction with our Business Coaching programme.
MBTI Group Workshop
This is a one-day "open workshop", where participants have the opportunity to explore differences with a group of participants from a number of different business areas, free of the pressure of the work environment.
MBTI Team Workshop
A one-day "team workshop", where a team has the opportunity to explore how knowledge of personality types and their interactions can be of direct relevance to improving team performance.
The process of exploring and understanding the personality "mix" within a team can lead the team members to a better understanding of the roles that each individual plays (or could play) within the team, and also to a better understanding of what personality bias might exist in the team and how it might be overcome.

In January Lightbeam became a fully accredited Train to Gain Service Provider.
